GIS based assessment of solar irradiance on the urban
fabric and potential for solar technology

The aim of SolarGIS is not to propose an alternative to scientific software such as RADIANCE or PV-SYST that calculate solar admittance very accurately at the scale of a building, but to provide a reasonable estimate during the first stages of studies at the urban scale through automated calculation using GIS techniques.
Output from SolarGIS are of big interest in urban design and planning.
As the tool provides calculation of solar irradiation on a whole city or territory, it can be used to add an additional data layer to existing spatial information systems of any city or region (e.g. www.sitg.ch).
SolarGIS is specially interesting for decision makers, community services and GIS data providers

A project to gain better understanding,
improve and promote green roofs in Geneva

In Geneva the benefits of green roof technologies are poorly understood.
The market for green roof products and services is steadily growing
The green roofs project in Geneva consists of two years of monitoring with the aim to evaluate:
Cost saving opportunities for the buildings (energy, water)
Benefits for biodiversity
Potential for green roofs for Geneva
Advancing our understanding of green roofs:
Measure private and public benefits of green roof technologies
Expert advice and expertise
Public policy support for green roof installations
The project encompasses engineers + architects + biologists + contractors + YOU ?
We are searching for local green roof professionals & contractors!

Real-time environmental monitoring of a city / region by
deployment of a mobile sensor and datalogger network

To better understand how cities behave and to adapt to increasingly demanding environmental challenges and constraints, it is essential to dispose of reliable and up to date physical and geo-referenced data produced at an acceptable cost.
Log-Net intends to deploy a network of mobile sensor and logger units aiming at monitoring of urban climate and air quality on a large scale (city - region). Measured data is made available via server GIS interface.
Possible applications range from better understanding of architectural and urban planning proposals to traffic regulation, irrigation, heat and energy flow assessment and control, risk assessment, nip management...
